Colour my world

I was that Grade 2 girl who knew colours by the description on the wax crayon wrapper.  Not "green", but olive green, apple green, forest green, moss green, sea green. Not brown, but dark brown, sienna, khaki.  Post box red, tomato red, sunshine yellow, mustard, lemon yellow...

I dislike primary colours when used in crochet/knitting.
I like pastels, but deeper, and muted, not fluffy and sugary sweet.
I don't like pink, although it can be very pretty - and I do love raspberry.

But my best colour is green and its versions.
Forest green, moss green. Greens with blues (bedroom), green with red (my living room/kitchen!), "Shutter Green" (a favourite Plascon paint colour).

When I buy yarn, though, I don't necessarily go for my favourite colours.  Then my colour choice will depend on the project, like when I wanted to do a Rainbow Ripple...
...or a blanket for a baby boy, using what Vinnis I had available:

What about the green/blue Malabrigo Rios, just because it was so utterly beautiful?
...or then the sunshiney yellow merino when I hooked a scarf for a snowy holiday,
the stool cover inspired by Klein Karoo veld colours...

and and and...

That is me - flitting from one to the other, but never too bright, never too sweet, never too light

Love the insight on how you choose colours. It makes a wonderful blogging theme... but I think mine wouldn't be as good a read as yours *lol* My colour choices go something like: Light and deep colour of EVERYTHING and some nice red to make the colours pop*gg*

I try :-)

hanks - I fought it for such a long time, because it can easily look horrible, and then I just gave in and now it works. Helps that I like shabby things - it softens the look :-0

And nothing wrong with that! That's why I also like to bring red in.
I like the colour theme, the other days' didn't really lift the heart rate here.

Bren...I have a magnificent example, hooked by a granny on the in-law side, of why pure and primary colours should not be allowed near a crochet hook.

Lovely work and color choices. The bedspread is spectacular. I love crocheting motifs, but dislike putting them together.

Vera - at first I didn't like joining-as-you-go, then I stitched together my first baby blanket...and it was JAYG all the way from there!

I think I had the same brand of crayons as you when I was younger too. :-)

Your pictures make a lovely summary and illustrate your colours better than any words. Did your picture collection help you to summarise your colour tastes, or had you already defined your tastes before and then found pictures to illustrate?

Jodie, I tried to write down what I like and don't like withou looking at any photos, just focusing on my colour preferences in general. i do like neutrals, although I didn't include it - e.g I wear a lot of black/charcoal as a basic, but after hooking with it once, I'm not sure I'll try again! Did enjoy a charcoal/grey recently.
